Owen is sitting up by himself! Not for a long time, but he can do it. He's been getting better at leaning forward and about a week or so ago, was able to brace himself upright with his hands (kind of like a tripod). I've been working on getting him to sit unassisted ever since, with some success. I'd love to be able to include some pictures, but one night when I tried to get a picture, he leaned back and cracked his head pretty hard on the floor... thankfully we have "19 lb" underlay, so it wasn't too hard on him... oops. He did cry though, mostly, I think, because he saw the look of shock on my face. It never gets boring seeing him learn how to do something for the first time.
In a way, it's opened up a floodgate of other abilities. He has been slowly grabbing himself lower and lower on his legs and I've been looking for him to grab onto his feet. With the gravity of his body, he easily grabs his feet while he sits. Of course, he's fascinated by them. The other thing that's new and improved is his ability to look for and reach out for things around him. With his head up higher, he can see more around him. Today, I had him sitting in front of me, braced somewhat between my legs (although I back off a bit so he's sitting on his own, but without the fear of him banging his head again). He looked around and saw the Whoozit barely within his reach. He reached out and grabbed for it. I had to help him out a little bit, but he eventually got a good grip and lifted it up to his mouth to take a taste.
His vocalizations have been getting better too. He's still pretty stuck on the razz, but he sometimes puts an "ahhh" before the spitting begins. He's really perfecting the razz, sticking his tongue out so he can really spray the spit. It often gets me in the face... no wonder my glasses have been so dirty lately. The new sound though is a mix between Ah-Ho and a fake laugh. He does it again and again and ends off with a nice razz. He must be practicing sentences.

6 months!!!
Owen turned six months old on Saturday. It's hard to believe that this adventure has been going on this long. And, at the same time, I can't even really remember what life was like before him (other than that I slept in a lot more). So much has happened already in these first six months.
We celebrated ute event with Uncle Lyle and cousins Cale and Dane. Kris made us some home-made pizza (which was delicious) and I made something called "Hot chocolate cake". It was sinful. 10 oz of chocolate and melter mini marshmallows on top. We lit six candles on the cake and the boys helped Owen blow them out.
Even though we said presents weren't necessary, there were a couple of presents.
Owen helped to unwrap them: a cute two piece sweater/pant set, and a dump truck that clicks as it rolls and has little balls in the back that pop when you drive it.

The razz is back
Owen has always been a pretty vocal guy. At about 8 weeks, he started goo-ing and hasn't looked back since. The thing is, he seems to fixate on one noise and practice, practice, practice.
So a while back I wrote that he'd learned to buzz his lips in a 'raspberry'. He practiced for about a week. It was a pretty wet week, since his discovery also coincided with a massive increase in his spit production. We used a lot of bibs and changed a lot of shirts. Well, he's remembered - or re-discovered - how to make the razz, and it's as spitty as the last time.
Funny, I was just thinking a couple of days ago, that he hadn't been making too many noises lately, and I remember thinking about the razz. Be careful what you wish for. It is a pretty cute sound, and he has so much fun making it.

Owen's First Olympics
Okay, so he's not exactly running with the torch, but truth be told, he can't run yet - Owen, that is. Dad took Owen to the mall (I think, so Owen could help him get Mom something for Valentine's Day) and got a picture with an Olympic torch. Don't they look great?

"Relley's"
My sister-in-law is a big fan of abbreviating words she uses with any regularity, or, as she likes to refer to them, "abrev's". They have driven here to visit their daughter in Banff, who's working at Sunshine as a liftie. They stopped by for a visit with the relley's (relatives). Both my sister- and brother-in-law are big baby people, so they were happy to have some Owen time. He was pretty happy to be passed around. He loves to see different faces and always coos at strangers. I have to admit it makes me a little jeleous that he smiles more at others than he does at me, but I know that will change soon enough. And when he does give me a smile, it's the best feeling in the world.

Go Canada
We were invited over to Kelly and Mike's to watch the Canada/US game. We all got decked out in our Canada gear: Kris in his team Canada jersey, me in my CANUCK t-shirt, and Owen in his CANADA shirt that Kris bought for him at the start of the olympics. Gotta support the team.
It wasn't until Canada scored their first goal that I was reminded of how Owen startles at loud yelling, even if it's for joy. He cried, just like he did at Grey Cup.
Alas, all of our Canadian pride wasn't enough to get us a win. It's not gonna be easy, but it should be exciting.

Today's menu
Owen's been eating foods for about three weeks now. He's had rice and barley cereals and sweet potato. And yesterday, I thought I'd try banana. I usually have a banana with my breakfast, so it's easy to do. Just mash with a fork, add a little breastmilk, and presto! He loved it too. I know, big surprise.

Oh when the Saints
We went out to watch the superbowl with "Auntie" Kelly today. Of course, Kris had Owen dressed up in the colors of the team he wished to win - the Saints. We had a good time, even though we were out a little past somebody's bedtime. He didn't seem to mind, as you can see. I think he was just all jazzed up on the excitement of the game and all the milk he pounded.

Things I've noticed lately
I've been pretty lax about the posts lately, so I've compiled a few things I've noticed that I wanted to blog about.
I've noticed that Owen is:
I've noticed that Owen is:
- way better at grabbing things. He transfers them from one hand to the other easier than he used to.
- anticipating when something is going to happen. Like, when I'm coming in to tickle him, he will scrunch up his face. Or, when I'm going to give him a kiss on the cheek, he smiles before I plant it.
- really, really, looking at things... and faces.
- trying to sit up when he is in his vibrating chair. I know he would jump into my lap if he could.
- sitting forward when he sits in my lap or on the pillow. He used to recline a lot more. He'll be sitting on his own before I know it.

Skiing in Lake Louise
We went skiing this past Saturday and put Owen in his first full day of daycare. The daycare at Louise was fully licenced and very well run. Kris and I were totally impressed. They give you a pager, have you fill out a ton of information for them, like when his naps will be, whether he's been babysat before, if he takes a soother, how he will be fed (for older kids they even provide snacks and lunch). They have cribs for naps in a seperate room and everything. It was awesome. For first time parents, Kris and I are pretty laid back about these sorts of things and didn't worry at all if he'd be okay.
I was pretty shaky on skis, especially since I didn't get any skiing in last year, being pregnant and all. But it came back to me pretty easily. By the end of the day I was doing black runs and a few moguls. I was pretty tired at the end though. The apre-ski beer is as good as I remember.
I came by half way through the day to feed him and he seemed really happy to see me. When I picked him up at the end, they told me that Owen didn't nap hardly at all - 2 naps, and a total of 45 minutes all day! The girl who took care of him said "He's a really good baby". I've gotta say, I don't ever get tired of hearing that from people. We are so lucky. He IS a really good baby... I wonder if we'll pay for it when he's a teenager. :P
